Kirk Cousins is not coming to Las Vegas to become a late-career escape artist. He is coming to make the Raiders’ offense arrive on time.

Cousins is a rhythm-and-diagnosis quarterback: win before the snap, confirm the picture during the drop and deliver from a stable platform before the rush rewrites the play. Klint Kubiak should not ask him to manufacture offense after structure collapses. He should build structure so cleanly that Cousins can punish a defense for being one step late.

The offense should feel like a sequence of traps. Ashton Jeanty threatens the front. Brock Bowers changes the coverage declaration. Michael Mayer and Connor Heyward create heavier personnel without announcing run. Tre Tucker, Jalen Nailor and Dont’e Thornton Jr. stretch the geometry. Cousins identifies which defender has been placed in conflict.

The Casual Crowd sees a pocket passer and translates that into “conservative.” That is box-score vocabulary, not film-room language.

Aggression is not determined by how far a quarterback runs. It is determined by how violently the offense attacks defensive rules. Under-center formations, condensed splits, motion and wide-zone action can force linebackers toward Jeanty, safeties into the fit, corners to exchange assignments and edges to choose between bootleg responsibility and pursuit.

Cousins does not need the defense to completely bust. He needs one defender to hesitate.

Picture Bowers shifting across the formation. If a defender travels, Cousins gets a man-coverage clue. If the secondary bumps and passes him off, he gets a zone clue. The run fake then pulls the second level forward while a crosser replaces the space it abandoned. The open receiver is the final result. The real victory happened when the defense declared how it planned to survive the formation.

And once Cousins identifies which defender has been forced to lie, the ball is designed to arrive before that defender can recover—which means the real target is not always the receiver who appears open, but...
