But in this offense, Brock Bowers, Michael Mayer, and Ian Thomas are not just pass-catchers. They are formation tools. They determine defensive personnel. They change run fits. They create disguise. They help decide whether the Raiders can live in heavier personnel without becoming predictable.
The unofficial 2026 depth chart lists Bowers, Mayer, Thomas, and Carter Runyon as the tight end room, with Kirk Cousins at quarterback and Connor Heyward as the lone fullback — an important detail because Kubiak has historically leaned into 12 and 21 personnel when the roster allows it.
That is the real story.
The Raiders do not just have “a good tight end room.” They have the kind of tight end room that can become the steering wheel of the offense.
The Surface Read
The surface scout sees Brock Bowers and stops there.
And honestly, understandable. Bowers is not exactly hiding in the film. He is the kind of tight end who makes linebackers look like they are trying to guard Wi-Fi. His production already puts him in rare company: Pro Football Reference lists him with 176 career receptions and 1,874 receiving yards through two seasons, including 64 catches for 680 yards last season. ESPN also noted that Bowers produced 64 catches, 680 yards, and seven touchdowns in 12 games.
The box-score version says: Bowers is TE1, Mayer is TE2, Thomas is depth.
That is not wrong.
It is just incomplete.
Because the smarter read is not about ranking the room. It is about how the room lets Kubiak ask defenses a question before the snap: are you treating this like a run formation or a passing formation?
